This political cartoon is an image that shows an opinion of President Obama’s new healthcare program. The cartoon takes place at a show and the audience consists of Uncle Sam and a donkey. Uncle Sam is a representation of the people of the United States of America. There is a man, who represents Obama’s healthcare plan, behind the curtain and he has his leg peeking out from behind it. His leg has a stocking on it which seems appealing to the audience. Uncle Sam and the donkey cannot see the rest of his body but due to the fact that they are attracted to the leg, they imagine that the rest is appealing as well. This is proven because the donkey says, “The more you see the more you’ll like.” However, the man behind the curtain is not appealing at all. The message of the cartoonist is to explain to America that Barack Obama’s healthcare plan isn’t as great as it actually seems. American citizens are being falsely led to believe his plan is beneficial.
President Obama’s healthcare program plans to give everyone healthcare. Even though Obama’s plan appears to be beneficial to the American people, it is validly described in the political cartoon because it is based on the increase of government control over medical practice and financing decisions that should be made by patients, insurers, and doctors, themselves. This plan deprives individuals of their own freedom due to the fact that bureaucrats are deciding citizens’ health coverage. Unfortunately, taxes would increase and employees of private insurance companies would lose their jobs. The citizens of the United States are falsely led to believe that healthcare for everyone is a good thing when in actuality it is a major harm to our country.
