This Political Cartoon shows the snake symbolizing the monopolies of the United States, such as Standard Oil, Carnegie Steel, and General Electric. The snake's tail is wrapped around the White House, because during the Gilded Age monopolies controlled the U.S. to a large degree. The government was not trying to stop them because they thought the monopolies were good for the country, even though monopolies threatened Democracy as the rich got richer and the poor got poorer. The drawing also shows the "monopolies" hissing or showing aggression towards Lady Liberty, saying you can't do anything about it. You can't stop us.
I believe that monopolies can be beneficial to the economy in certain ways. A monopoly means that there is one seller to the item. This can eliminate "competitors" from other similar production companies trying to get you to buy their item for another price.
