In this cartoon the scene takes places in the Jeopardy game room. You have three contestants Barack Obama, a computer by the name of Watson and an elephant. There is an answer on the board that reads “The right way to solve the looming debt crisis” .Just as in the true spirit of Jeopardy the answer needs the right question .Barack Obama writes his answer which is “What are tax hikes?” and the elephant follows by writing “what are spending cut ?” both answers are incorrect. Watson however comes up with the correct answer of “what is entitlement reform?” which brings him to yet ANOTHER win. Watson has no problem of gloating either by saying to his opponents “Um…Duh, Guys”. Taking a look at each competitor’s bank we see that Obama (who represents the Democratic Party) has a balance of -$3,792 and the elephant (who represents the Republican Party) has a balance of -$3,538 just under Obama’s total but still in the negative. In contrast to Watson’s total who has a balance of $40,961 well over both of his opponents.
The artist uses visual imagery, metaphors and caesura in order to show that when it comes on to simple answers neither political parties know the question to ask. They are steadfast in their beliefs. Both are so caught up into what they represent that looking at the bigger picture is not an option. It takes a third party, something as a computer to point out this fact. I do support this text. Politicians and their party sees things the way their belief has always been for example one party might see blue and the other might see red but if you look closer you will notice that the color is in fact green.
